Brooks Beasts Smash 4x1 Mile Relay World-Best Time, Set New Record

The Brooks Beasts obliterated the indoor 4x1 Mile Relay world-best time to set a new record of 16 minutes, 3.68 seconds. The team of David Ribich, Henry Wynne, Brannon Kidder and Izaic Yorks each took the baton around The Armory track at the Dr. Sander Invitational and outkicked the previous record holders, the Hoka NJ-NY Track Club, to break the tape and secure their team record.

“I am so happy for this team. What a great week signing Olympian Marta Pen Freitas on Tuesday and then setting a world record today,” said Brooks Beasts Head Coach Danny Mackey. “This record represents what the Beasts talk about every day. They want to be the best in the world, and they want to do it together.”

The previous record of 16:12.81 was set by the NJ-NY in 2017; that team placed second in a time of 16:16.05 today. The Beasts’ 16:03.68 not only broke the indoor world-best time, but it also broke the American absolute best time—indoor or outdoor—set by Athletics West in 1984. That time was 16:08.54.

The Beasts relay began with David Ribich followed by Henry Wynne, Brannon Kidder and Izaic Yorks who anchored the team. The Beasts and NJ-NY jockeyed back and forth for the lead in the first two legs until Wynne took over in the final laps of his race. Kidder and Yorks both ran sub-4-minute miles on their way to their new record. Their finish underscores the dominance of the Beasts in the distance.

“Today’s relay was run beautifully by everyone! There was something poetic about it,” said Brooks Beast Izaic Yorks. “Setting the world-best time is an affirmation of all of our hard work, and it’s a spark for what’s to come for the rest of the year.”

Yorks, who won a silver medal in the 1,500-meter at the 2018 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships is the veteran of the team while this is Ribich’s first professional track season. The 1-mile personal records for the Beasts relay team are: Brannon Kidder, 3:56.06, David Ribich, 3:58.09, Henry Wynne, 3:55.23, and Izaic Yorks, 3:53.4.

“We’re incredibly proud of the Brooks Beasts for their new world record,” said Brooks Running Sports Marketing Manager Steve DeKoker. “This group works hard and inspires countless runners to dream big and have fun within our sport. We can’t wait to welcome the team back to Seattle and celebrate their achievement.”
