As the Oregon high school state championships approach this weekend a Hayward Field in Eugene, DyeStat editor Doug Binder brings together Nike professional Galen Rupp and Tualatin High runners Caleb and Aaron Lakeman. Rupp broke the Oregon high school mile record held by Dirk Lakeman, Caleb and Aaron's father, when he was a senior in 2004, running 4:01.8. Caleb was six months old at the time and Aaron was not yet born. The discussion follows that history, the importance of records versus competition and winning championships and Rupp offers some advice about managing nerves at the state meet and setting goals. Dirk Lakeman and Rupp's mother, Jamie Mitchell, both competed in the 1977 Oregon state championships.

What a great idea to bring the generations of stars together like this! Great idea, and track and field will absurdly benefit from more of it!
